What is the Experience?

Grab a rare opportunity to explore a glacier up-close. You’ll see all three Franz Josef Glacier ice-falls on this heli-hike.

The experience starts with an aerial viewing of the ancient frozen river. It's a magical experience, not to mention the panoramic views of the Southern Alps and surrounding rain forest.

Once you land on the glacier itself, you’ll be guided on a two-hour expedition through a wonderland of ice tunnels and towering pinnacles. You’ll also learn about the history of the area and why the ice has a mysterious blue hue, before hopping aboard the helicopter for another memorable flight home.

Where is it located?

Helicopter Line is located on the Main Road – State Highway 6 -- just north of Franz Josef township. The flight will depart from their offices. (Note: State Highway 6 is the main highway to Franz Josef from either Wanaka or Greymouth.)
